This photo is my pride and joy. I have desperately wanted to photograph a hawk in his natural environment for about as long as I have been watching birds. Throughout most of the summer I longed to get a photo every time I saw one. He is a large, broad-winged, round tailed hawk that veers as he soars in wide circles, the rufous of the upperside of the tail can be seen from below transmitting a hint of red. This type of hawk is classified as a Buteo or Buzzard Hawk. He is a predator, not a scavenger like vultures and buzzards. He feeds on live prey not carrion. He hunts smaller birds including smaller hawks as well as small rodents and other small mammals. Several hawks are are given descriptive names according to their dietary preference. That is how he got the name Buzzard Hawk. There is also a Pigeon Hawk and a Sparrow Hawk which are smaller than the Red Tailed Hawk.
