I started sketching my little granddaughter, eyelashes and hair... but couldn't place her face there. Thought about her birth mother, and others I knew, and some I coached through labor and delivery when I lived in Washington. The picture took off from there. I imagined the dreariness of laboring alone in the shower in a place that's not your own -- a rental, a shelter -- with perhaps a bare bulb lighting the bathroom. I didn't try to add pain to her face, just concentration. I "saw" her with her arm overhead, propping her against the shower wall, but couldn't get the perspective right. It's done with watercolor pencils, and I particularly liked the way the hair looked using them.
Her expression is wonderful!
