About Bates MOTELLA Gallery

When I was very little, my mother would keep me still by setting me at the kitchen table with a napkin and crayons.  They were those cheap puckery napkins with embossed flowers and borders, and I would color them while she put away the groceries.  That's when I was a great artist.

I was probably in third grade when my mother stopped putting my pictures on the fridge and started collecting my stories instead.

In 7th grade, an A student, I failed an art project where you made a picture with yarn.  I thought until about a year ago that the teacher said my colors didn't match.  Purple and green?  She's WRONG, I say!!  One day, however, I was reading The Artella Daily Muse, something about complementary colors, and really felt a lightbulb above my head... slowly flicker... and I wondered... Could I possibly have misunderstood? Perhaps I didn't, maybe, read the assignment? Was I supposed to create a picture with COLOR WHEEL complementary colors, and not just colors that looked nice together?

When you come right down to it, what I love about art has never been the math or science of it.  (Conversely, the only thing I love about math and science is the art of it.)  So, I'm just picking up where I left off, somewhere between third and seventh grade.
