Beautiful, moving, touching, eloquent!!! (And, said the snail at the top of the knoll, It's all downhill from here...)
The Ballad of Betty Prior
by Constance Bates
No one could say from whence I'd come,
I just popped up for
free;
Alongside stately old roses,
There suddenly was me.
Although I was an average thing,
My person thought me pretty:
She
commented, "Oh look, a pink --
I think I'll call her...
Betty."
The other roses laughed a bit,
Although they tried to hide it;
I knew
my parentage was poor;
But thought to just abide it.
I sat beside Bing Crosby then,
Will Scarlet, and Bronze Star,
Wishing
I were Robin Hood --
But you are who you are.
I thought of borrowing Joseph's Coat,
But then Just Joey said,
"See
Sexy Rexy over there?
They once lopped off her head."
The Fairy hit the carpet then,
So pale was Rosy Cheeks,
And Cecile
Brunner said he'd never
Heard of such techniques!
"It seems she kind of just gave up,
Refused to blossom, too.
You'd
best be careful, Betty, or
That could happen to you."
Neon Lights suggested that
I outperfume dear Chloris,
Whose smell, if
I may say so,
Could use buckets of Lavoris.
"Do talk to Razzle Dazzle!"
Recommended stout Ralph's Creeper.
They
all said, "Take a page from Peace --
Now that one is a
keeper."
I put the Neon Lights on then,
I posed like Madame Hardy,
And
though a Lady of the Dawn,
I strive to remain hearty.
I pretend I'm Constance Spry,
Believe I am First Prize,
And stake my
claim like Bonica,
And sway like Flutterbyes.
See, though I don't know who I am,
I hold my bloom much higher:
I say
"My name isTiffany",
Though only Betty, prior.
1. "For many years, Betty Prior was one of the most popular roses in the
United States, and it is still very popular. It is a graceful small
upright bush with single pink flowers that are displayed in clusters
that often rise above the foliage. The ovoid buds of this rose
open to medium-size, single carmine-pink cupped blooms with darker pink
on the reverse sides of the petals. The fragrant flowers occur in
clusters, and repeat throughout the growing season." -- http://www.ph-rose-gardens.com/01307.htm
2. "Not complicated or fragile. Hardy and enduring. Well, in a word, sensible. Thomas C. Cooper writes: 'The rose Betty Prior is rumored to be the favorite of the Queen of England, and if this is true, I imagine the appeal for her is similar to that of another English institution for which she has a well-documented affection - the sensible shoe.'" -- http://www.marinrose.org/monthjuly04.html
