Shall we make this swap 10 for 10? I am certain more people will want to play in this Second swap. And I'm thinking February 15 as commitment date and April 10 as a submission date. Let me know what you think, how this might fit your plans. We don't have to make iron-clad 'rules.'

Hi Pat, Please count me in on this one!  Can you tell us if there was a common size and construction guidelines everyone used or did everyone do their own thing?  Can you reference to a particular post or website for recommendations?

Hi Lori! At the start of the First Zine Swap, Billizetti offered us some great links to get information and examples/ideas. Those resources helped me get a feel for it. That post is here: http://artellacafe.com/forums/t/1240.aspx and you can also "google" "zines" for more info.

Pat, I like the idea of another zine swap, so count me in. I am open to the dates and your suggestions are fine with me. Also, if it is not too much work for everyone, I'd love to get one of each next time. I don't know what the protocol is regarding this, since it was my first zine swap.

Lori-- Sizes? All over the place, little to big. Mine was 8 1/2 x 11, I think that was the largest. Themes or subject? It's whatever you want it to be. Binding? However you want to do it. I just stapled mine together, then glued a decorative strip of paper to cover the staples, front and back. 

Techniques? Everything from all hand-made to scanned and printed. Some had a little something extra, not bound in to the zine. But that's not required. 

Glad you both are aboard already! I'm excited ...

In case some of you don't know it, there is a gallery with pictures from all of the zines from the first swap in the Artella Galleries section you can check out.  You will see there were sizes from large to small.  That's what I love about self-publishing.  You have full control and can do whatever you want about whatever you want.  After you make your first zine, you will be hooked!  I have a huge collection of handmade zines from all kinds of swaps I have been in.  It is so much fun to pull them out every once in a while and get all kinds of inspiration.

In case you aren't quite sure what a zine is, here is the definition found in Wikipedia: 

A zine—an abbreviation of the word fanzine, and originating from the word magazine^[1][2]—is most commonly a small circulation, non-commercial publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published work of minority interest.

Zines are written in a variety of formats, from computer-printed text to comics to handwritten text (an example being Cometbus). Print remains the most popular zine format, usually photo-copied with a small circulation. Topics covered are broad, including fanfiction, political, personal, social, or sexual content far enough outside of the mainstream to be prohibitive of inclusion in more traditional media. The time and materials necessary to create a zine are seldom matched by revenue from sale of zines. Small circulation zines are often not explicitly copyrighted and there is a strong belief among many zine creators that the material within should be freely distributed. In recent years a number of photocopied zines have risen to professional status and have found wide bookstore distribution. Highly notable among these are Giant Robot, Bust, and Maximum RocknRoll.

• Wow! EIGHT people have signed up already! I'm sure there'll be more. This is who I have on my list, so far:

I think 10 copies is about all I can manage (but then, I used to think 5 was stretching!). If more than 10 people sign up, the swap can remain at "10 for 10".

Annemarie, believe me--you CAN do this! It's just one page at a time. Then you get photocopies (or print copies on your own printer). Then you collate the pages. You will be amazed at yourself!

What took me the longest was deciding on a theme. I had several ideas before I came up with the Momma/goddess theme--so I have several ideas on the back burner already. This one will be a Sumi-e art and haiku theme. After this one, I'll do Momma Part Two!

Okay Pat, yikes! I just don't want to disappoint anyone. So, we pick one subject, then just create a booklet all about that one subject, whether it's photos, articles, poems, etc.

Two dates were listed Feb. 14th or 15th, then April ? for submission, what does that mean?

Hey annamarie!  The best part about creating zines is that there is no way you can fail.  Zines are whatever you want them to be.  You are the creator and publisher.  You can have pictures, or you don't have to have pictures.  You can include poems, or you don't have to include poems.  Your zine can be nothing but printed copies of your art work without any words at all.  You can create one original zine, and then the rest can be photo copies or printed from your own printer.  Some people, though, who must have an awful lot of time on their hands, make each zine an original.  I like printing each copy and then adding something to each one that gives it a 3 dimensional feel.  I glued a beer bottle cap onto each cover of my zine for our first swap.  It was a Bud Lite bottle cap with only the initials BL on it.  My zine was titled "Bill's Log," so the bottle cap fit right in.  Sometimes I put stickers on some of the pages.  Sometimes I paper clip an ATC I've made in each zine.  You can make your zine whatever you want it to be!    That's what makes it so fun.
