How do you make paint glow?

This is the first time I've been in this forum and I was wondering if anybody could help me by answering a qustion.  I would like to start experimenting with some of my paints for the purpose of creating very specific subjects. I'm not sure what type of paint I want to use yet. I have water color, acrylic, and oils. In order to do the paintings I want to do, I need to be able to get a glowing or celectial appearance on the medium I use. I have no idea how to achieve this effect. Can anyone help me by telling me how I can achieve this result? Any and all comments are welcome. Thanks for your help, in advance!

I'd like to know the answer to your question, too.  I did a collage about mermaids, and for the final coating I'd like to put something over the entire canvas that has a simmering look.  I don't know what to use.

Julie, I avoided answering this post because I am not sure how to make it glow. But then after reading Bill's post, I just remembered an artist I met in September 2007 and I don't know if this is what you are wanting.

What David creates is celestial-appearing images using neon spraypaints. He first creates a matte black background and then does the most amazing work with spraypaint than I ever thought possible! You really believe that you are looking at a real galaxy or solar system.

I don't believe they glow as in "glow in the dark" yet they have a luminescence that is mesmerizing! He also sprays through wire mesh for even finer spatter and interesting designs.

I just added to my list to get his permission to share a photo I took of his art, and then I'll be able to post it here.

    Hi Julie,

If you are asking which of the 3 mediums will make the artwork have a "glow", then, I am suggesting it would be the oil paint. This is what I like about oil paintings over the other 2 mediums. I first noticed this many years ago when I was in a museum and I saw a "real" live Cezanne painting. It just glowed!

    Oh, Mary!

You are just too sweet. Thank you so much for giving this question so much thought as well as effort. I will look forward to seeing the picture should you get permission from David. A lightbulb just went off in my head as I'm writing this post. Do you remember David's last name? Maybe we could find him on the web. What do you think?

    Hi Julie,

I left a voice mail for David to give me a call earlier and I haven't heard from him yet. He is a local talent and doesn't have an online presence. I'm excited to share, however, I do want to get his permission first before sharing.

You'll be the first to know!

    Hugs,

    Mary

    Hi all,

Bill, you were looking for something to make a shimmering effect and I have a suggestion. I followed a link in the Daily Muse this morning and looked around at createforless.com.

Krylon Paper Finishes "Make It Iridescent" sounds interesting.

    Julie,

I hope these images aren't too large (I cropped and optimized). David's art is here! He asked, "Who wants to see it?" and "Why?" I have to work on his lack of confidence. This is all done with spraypaint, and in this case he worked on corrugated cardboard. It looks better in person.

    A closer look:

That's all the info I have about glowing paint. I think Sandi suggested oils.

    Have a nice day!

Re: How do you make paint glow?

Hi Julie, I've been painting with acrylics for a few years and I've found a couple of ways to make things "glow". I use interference paints....here's a description of what they do:

Iridescent, pearlescent, interference, and metallic acrylics combine conventional pigments with powdered mica (aluminum silicate) or powdered bronze to achieve complex effects. Colors have shimmering or reflective characteristics, depending on the coarseness or fineness of the powder. Iridescent colors are used in both fine arts and crafts (this is from Dick Blick).

I've also used a combination of acrylic gel mixed with a tiny bit of liquid acrylic colour (so it remains transparent) and gold pigment. The effect was really rich and had lots of depth.

Hopefully this'll still get to you even tho it's a few months late!

     cheers

Re: How do you make paint glow?

    Hi Maggie!

Thank you sooooooo much! It's never, ever too late to find out about how to make things glow. Thanks for the tips. I can be a little flashy sometimes (OK, very often!), so I love to find new ways to make things glow, glitter, sparkle, and show some bling. Any and all tips are always welcome.

Welcome to Artella Land the the Cafe! It's certainly good to have you here. I hope you like it as much as I do!
