    Poetry Challenge: A Thanksgiving Acrostic

    Anybody up for a Thanksgiving Acrostic?

    Then suddenly I'm six years old

    Hungering for my grandma's hand

    And thirsting for my mother's smile --

    Now the women send me back:

    Kitchens aren't for little girls, and

    Someday you will understand --

    Go, and find some thing to do.

    I'm pressed and freshly ribboned, though,

    Vigorously clean and readied

    In white socks and patent leather shoes -- !

    Now I wear muslin with bare feet:

    Give me grandchildren at my side.

    I could feel the highs and the lows of the little girl.  She will not make the same mistake her mother and grandmother did.  I liked your use of the word "readied" in the poem; it seemed to add emphasis of her inacceptance.  Thanks, Constance.

    They called me up at

    Half past three

    Aunt Marie thawed the turkey but

    No, it was a chicken.

    Keep with tradition, grumped Grandpa.

    So nothing else would do.

    Get us a turkey, they told me.

    I drove to the grocery store.

    Vibrantly colored signs plastered

    Inside the store window

    No More Turkeys! the signs said.

    Gravy goes with chicken too.

    Thanksgiving at Grandma's House

    Tables piled with luscious food

    Hands outstretched in welcome hugs

    All our kinfolks gathered 'round

    Nog for all in ice cold mugs

    Kitchen full of sights and smells

    Seasonings and just-baked pies

    Goodies stacked on every space

    It fills our minds and lights our eyes

    Very soon the cry rings out

    "In your places, left and right!"

    No one's ever turned away

    Grandma does Thanksgiving right!

     What an enchanting verse!  Of COURSE you do Thanksgiving right (and poetry, too).

    Thankful that I'm

    Happy

    Aware that others do

    Not have

    Kisses on holidays

    Smiles from loved ones

    Grama's gone and they feel as

    Insignificant as a spinster on

    Valentine's Day

    Inside they are dying from

    Never-enough love

    God help me to be thankful

    A Thanksgiving Acrostic Poem written
    on the Day after Thanksgiving Day

    Thanksgiving Day has come and passed, now a gift in our memories.
    Hundreds of miles driven on snowy roads for family gatherings;
    And platters of turkeys and hams eaten ‘round crowded tables;
    Naps taken after the meal, eyes slowly closing amidst familiar voices;
    Kettles steamed and whistled, hot tea warming our hands and hearts;
    Songs sung, laughs laughed while wiping spilled gravy from the table.
    Grandpa jiggled the newest granddaughter on his lap as she chuckled.
    I smiled as I peeked in each occupied room, a fire ablaze in one and
    Vases filled with dried flowers from summer’s garden in another.
    I thought of the many memories from months just gone by.
    Needs well satisfied, happily surrounded by my loved ones, and
    Grateful for the many blessings and lessons given to me this year.
