Idea [I] ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS in Creativity Contest #28 -- "Lost Art" Post Cards

The Challenge for Creativity Contest #28: Create a picture post card with the theme "Lost Art"

Here are the winners in Creativity Contest #28.  The top four of them will be included as a printed postcard in the upcoming printed issue of Artella!

    FIRST PLACE
    Barb Starrenburg
    "The Lost Art of Listening"
    Digital Collage
A genuine good listener captures the trust and attention of people. We all listen to others on a daily basis. Do we really listen, though? Listening seems to be a "lost art" and takes true talent and plenty of practice. The statue in this artwork is a 1842 Photographic Print by Edward Hodges Baily entitled, "Naked Figure of Eve Listening to the Voice in White Marble."

    SECOND PLACE
    Cheryl Stevenson
    "Lost in Storage!"
I used an old postcard from Romania (1964) as a base for this collaged postcard, imagining it as an announcement for a show of newly discovered, or "lost", of the artist shown (E. Delacroix). I traced the faded postcard elements with black ink, added an acetate overlay snippet of flowers and a strip of old text, and stamped and colored a butterfly (my symbol for artwork emerging from its hidden storage, or cocoon).

    THIRD PLACE
    Sandi Keefer
    "not lost ART"
    1350 x 1050, 300 dpi
In the spring I hung a basket of flowers on my door. To my surprise a bird made a nest there and laid 5 eggs! I altered photos digitally that I took of the basket and nest of eggs, adding text and clip art.

    FOURTH PLACE
    Tara Douglas-Smith
    "The Artist's Compass"

AND HERE ARE THE REST OF THE WONDERFUL ENTRIES:

    Barbara (Aunt Bobby) Miller
    "Sister Art - Lost"
Digital manipulation of photo and clip art
My sister's nickname is "Art", and here she is shown lost on an island in the middle of the ocean.

I'm really excited about this contest, and at the prospect of publishing the four winners as removable postcards in the next print Artella issue! So I hope that the deadline extension will give everyone interested ample opportunity to try your hand at postcard design.

Please don't let the requirements for high resolution intimidate you - we're happy to help if you have any questions!

    Let's see those designs!

Re: ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS in Creativity Contest #28 -- "Lost Art" Post Cards

I will admit, when I first saw the theme for this Creativity Contest, I flinched and thought to myself, "How can I interpret a theme like "Lost Art"?  Then I thought about it, really looked into the idea, and realized that this theme is amazing. It was very challenging. It made me question what "Lost Art" means to me, and I was really interested in how others interpreted this in Artella.

I'm really appreciative of members who voted in this contest and to the artists who inspired me to see "Lost Art" in different ways.  I can hardly wait to see the postcards in the upcoming Artella print issue.

Re: ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS in Creativity Contest #28 -- "Lost Art" Post Cards

This is one contest I really wanted to win, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.  [:'(]  When I first saw the art journals kept by Dan Eldon, I was utterly amazed!  My sister had gotten a book from the Dexter, MI library about Dan Eldon's short life.  The story about his horrible death at the hands of people he wanted to help, and the pictures of the pages of his journals, really touched me.  After crying myself to sleep upon learning my postcard was not one of the chosen four, the inner recesses of my comatose brain realized I could do something else with the postcard.  I hadn't been able to come up with any subject for the current zine swap, and the deadline was fast approaching.  I decided my zine will be about Dan Eldon.  I will put a copy of my postcard in each of the zines.  It will be even more special than the others, because only 10 people will receive a copy of my zine and my postcard.  There's more than one way to win in Artellaland!  Cool

Congratulations, though, to the four ladies who will have their postcards published in Artella.  They were all beautiful!

Re: ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS in Creativity Contest #28 -- "Lost Art" Post Cards

Ah, Poor Bill!  Your inner child and mine should get together some day.  (They are very wonderful children, despite the occasional tantrum or inappropriate outburst.)

You are so right about the many ways you can "win" at Artella... and it's an amazing thing about inspiration: She is a trippy Muse, drawing bits and pieces and snippets and tossing them around until you're dizzy and determined to capture her!  I don't know about Dan Eldon, and confess that I didn't look him up, even after seeing the name on your art. We'll get to learn more, I'm sure, as you work!

Maybe I'm the only one who wasn't disappointed at not winning this one. You folks invested much time and effort and artistic skill, and it truly shows!... but I must admit, this contest has rewarded me, too: I can't even look at my little attempt without cracking up when I read, "I've seen London, I've seen France"!  HA!  I created my own self a tickle-machine!

Re: ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS in Creativity Contest #28 -- "Lost Art" Post Cards

Bill - I thought you solution to this challenge was brilliant - using it as an opportunity to celebrate Dan Eldon.  What a profound - and very true - way to express the concept of "Lost Art".

And the fact that you took your "loss" and turned it around to inspire your next zine theme is even more brilliant!  Your zines are always so amazing and to honor Dan Eldon in this way will be nothing short of amazing, I'm sure.  I'm so impressed and inspired by you!

Your postcard made me laugh, too, Constance.  You can tickle my fancy any day!

Thank you for your very kind words, Marney.  I'm really excited now about creating those zines.  I've been working on them today.  Party!!!  Just think.  Marney introduced me to the world of zines, and Dan Eldon introduced me to art journaling.  I thank both of you!
