    Still confused about copyrights

I've been to the funnystrange website as directed in another forum but am still confused as to what is acceptable to use in works that may be sold or displayed.  For example, are things cut out of vintage magazines/books, ads, newspapers not usable in art that may be sold, what about using rubber stamps.  Give me examples of what you use to avoid copyright issues beyond creating your own background paper or drawings.  Thank you for your help!

    Re: Still confused about copyrights

Copyrights is something to always be aware of. I personally only purchase products that will allow me to have re-sell rights, otherwise I don't even bother myself. If I really see something I like, I just create my own version with my own twist of it from scratch, then it's mine.

Depending on what kinds of items you are looking for, an example of a good resource to start is Dover Publications, you can use up to 10 of their items per creative idea for resale without getting permission. I make alot of my own items and plan to open my own digital store front offering my custom made items for commerical use to others for resale.

When I do write to companies for permission if I am unsure if I can use something of their's, I let them know how I am using it, get their permission with any guidelines and save the permission in my records, (like from Dover, I wrote to them for clarity because it was worded confusing on the back of their books.)

good luck, my motto, if in doubt, don't use it if you want to re-sell it. Try to only purchase items that specifically say you have resale rights.

Welcome to Artella Finding My Muse!

For rubber stamps, look for companies or individuals with "Angel Policies" which allow you to use the stamps for resellable creations as long as you physically handstamp the item and don't use a printing service. Alluring Impressions is an Angel Company that carries many "angel" stamp designers. Here is a link to their Angel Policy: http://www.alluringimpressions.com/faq.htm#Angel_Company_Policy I also suggest looking at the policies of the individual designers, just to be safe. There are many Angels out there, as you will see, but there are even more who are not Angels that have strict guidelines: "Don't use my stuff!"

While I understand copyrights and the desire to have credit given where due, I also believe art is to be shared. After spending way too much money on rubber stamps that I found out I can't use for resellable items, I now throw my money toward Angel Companies after researching them. I have also begun carving my own stamps and desigining my own this-and-that to avoid any conflicts.

Also, check out http://www.teeshamoore.com/ and click on Rubber Stamps.

Follow some links from those sites to locate other "Angel Companies."

I hope this helps you out! You can find a lot of designs that you love and will be able to use!
