I am thinking about a “Dream Vacation” and letting my imagination wander. I’ll lay money on it that by the time I am done, someone – somewhere – is going to be falling on the floor laughing at my idea of a vacation, but here goes.
Airports, crowds, and sitting still in an airplane, are all unpleasant things for me, which add to my level of stress, thereby detracting from my idea of a vacation, so a magic carpet ride is an absolutely must. And let me be very specific about the magic carpet ride accommodations. The carpet must not waver around in the air, like you see in the Aladdin cartoons. No, my idea of a magic carpet ride is that I go sit down, cross-legged, on my carpet, and instantly I am in my dream destination.
So I arrive at my Dream Vacation Destination (or DVD). It is a blissful 75 degrees: not too hot, not too cool. Just right! Oh, and who is with me, instantly? Beloved husband, dressed in a cool Hawaiian shirt, jeans, and sandals; and my four kitties, who sleep on the sofa arms, and the two dogs, except—miraculously—Max no longer is a non-stop barkie dog. And they have all been bathed and smell like lavender soap, and I don't have to worry at all about their happiness or safety whenever I leave the room.
So we arrive at our destination to a lovely suite, with a balcony with two queen-size beds, a sitting area, a kitchenette, a refrigerator, and two sets of French doors overlooking an ocean: a pleasant, swimmable ocean! Even though, remember my request that it is 75 degrees outside. Just to make sure we’re clear, here. Anyway, we are up on the second or higher floor, so our French doors are a bit private; people walking by cannot look in, and we have the view, and a pleasant breeze. The King-size bed is covered with a puffy, starched, clean comforter, and a beautiful, original piece of interesting artwork graces the wall above it.
In the refrigerator, we find tons of fresh washed and cut-up fruit, tons of bottled water, some margaritas, salad, cold chicken, and chocolate mousse.
I change into a swimsuit and wraparound scarf and find to my surprise in the mirror that I look absolutely fabulous. I am a trim 125 and my skin is a golden brown. My hair is behaving itself quite nicely and I no longer have a wrinkle-dy neck or jowls.
As might be expected, Bob is already settled on the bed, relaxing and looking fit and wonderful. He is happy just to be near a TV and stereo, and in the afternoon, he will go to the complimentary full-workout gym, and then out to visit the Botanical Gardens. Meanwhile, I take a dip in the pool, moving languidly back and forth across the pool for an hour or so, feeling like I’m getting good exercise. I spend an hour drying in the sun before returning to the room to take a brief nap before dinner.
As we wait in the lovely downstairs dining room, in fresh clothes, and gaze out the lovely open-air wall onto the beach and water, I look over our schedule for the next five days: aerobics class; stretch class; spin class; shopping trip; women’s reading and discussion group; garden tour; art class; Hawaiian luau on the beach late evening one night; tour of local bookstore/coffee shops; outdoor movie night … this is going to be the best vacation EVER!!!

"A Dream Vacation"
Essay
My idea of a dream vacation is not to travel to a distant land or even the next city. My dream vacation has all the comforts of home because it IS home! The chores and distractions of everyday life are banished to a distant land! There would be no phones or doorbells ringing, no “just one more thing to do first”. A dream vacation would be to wake up without an alarm clock to a sunny, warm (but not too warm!) day with no wind or maybe a gentle breeze. I’d dress in my most comfy clothes, not concern myself with make-up or style my hair. All my favorite foods would be easily and quickly prepared, even though I enjoy cooking! We would eat these tasty meals at the dining room table which would be covered with one of the vintage tablecloths from my collection. After meals, the table would magically be cleared, the dishes washed and dried and replaced in the cupboard, ready for the next meal. I would spend the days creating, watching movies with my husband, shopping with my daughter. There would be time to sit outside on the deck or in the garden enjoying the blooming flowers and dreaming of the fresh vegetables to be enjoyed later in the summer, maybe read a book or magazine. I’d end the day with a fragrant bubble bath, and then drift off to sleep on crisp bedding that was dried on the backyard clothesline in the fresh air! The next few days would be the same and I would be refreshed and relaxed, ready to go back to the challenges of daily life!
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO VOTED, and
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS!
