SECOND PLACE
Julie Burger
"Prickly Pear Cactus"
Original was done on 9" X 12" watercolor paper and then scanned and reduced. Watercolor paints and pencils, colored pencils, some highlights in chalk and oil pastels, and just to round it all out a little bit of marker here and there.
Prickly Pear Cactus
Until I visited a local wildlife refuge along the marshes of Jamaica Bay in Queens in New York City, I had no idea that there was a cactus that actually grew in the Northeastern United States. Much to my surprise and delight, the Prickly Pear Cactus thrives right here in my own neck of the woods. It is the only cactus that grows here in the wild. Now, I even have one growing in a clay pot on my patio.
What does the Prickly Pear Cactus have to do with June, you ask? Well, June is the month that the Prickly Pear Cactus displays its magnificent and delicate yellow flowers. I wait all year to see the luscious Prickly Pear fruits and the delicate little flowers. My Prickly Pear hasn't bloomed yet, but it won't be much longer. Since I can't show you a photograph yet, youll have to settle for my artistic interpretation.

THIRD PLACEArthiss Kliever
"Double Rings Wedding Banner"
This 2' x 3' quilted banner is one of nine that I made eight years ago for my daughter's June wedding procession. Honored guests carried the banners, and all other guests carried flags and ribbons, placing them in a circle in the tree-lined alcove that formed the altar for her outdoor ceremony. The Double Ring Banner was the central focal point, and was placed directly behind the minister. The patchwork banner is made from small swatches of white fabric of different textures, including pieces of her wedding gown, with accents of gold and yellow trim. It is backed with dark green satin and is machine quilted.
