Re: Name this children's book illustrator

Ta da! Yes, indeed it is, chameleon. Thanks for including that quote, too.

Here is a basic biography: http://www.chrisbeetles.com/pictures/artists/Attwell_Mabel-Lucie/Attwell_Mabel-Lucie.htm (includes some samples of her work)

And here is another interesting bio: http://www.ortakales.com/Illustrators/Attwell.html

I admire her business sense as well as her work (Not so much the subject matter as the way in which she used lines).

Onward, chameleon, with the next brain-buster! Geeked

An artist is not a special kind of person.

Every person is a special kind of artist.

Your Monday Morning Wakeup Call, Ladies and Gentlemen, is to match the clues to the artist!

    • born on September 13,1951 in Seattle
    • was named to the University of Washington Alumni Association's 1999 magazine list of 100 "most famous, fascinating and influential" alumni of the 20th century
    • spends nearly nine months a year traveling, carefully researching the locations as well as pre-visualizing the photographs the artist wants to take
    • maintains a gallery, stock agency, production company and digital photography school in the SODO district of Seattle
    • has taken an estimated one million images and has released over sixty books
    • the artist's stunning images interpret and record the world's fast-disappearing wildlife, landscapes and native cultures

Besides his multitude of photographic talents, this man's first name suits him to a tee!  I came to know his work through a 13-episode series airing nationwide on public television. Congrats, Sooz!

    Name this Contemporary Artist

Hi, everyone.  Sorry that I dropped the ball.  I was THIS close to asking someone to take my turn, but then said, "Oh, come on, Sooz, you can do this! "  So, here you go:

This contemporary artist is about 65 years old right now.  He is a type of sculptor, although with an unusual material.  He is from the Pacific Northwest where he began his artistic training but eventually found himself the first American of his medium to work in a very prestigious studio in Italy where artists specialize in this type of work.  He now spends his time working in his own 25,000 square foot studio in his native city here in the US.

In 1976, this artist lost an eye in an automobile accident, and so now can only design his work and must have his team of artists actually create it based on his color paintings and specifications.   His work is instantly recognizable by it's brilliant abstract forms.

    Name this "brilliant" artist!!

Translucent and transparent; intense, vibrant color....none other than the glass artist, Dale Chihuly?  While on vacation to Las Vegas, Nevada a few years ago, we were absolutely stunned by his work, " Fiori Di Como" at the Bellagio Resort (see: http://www.chihuly.com/installations/bellagio/Art/BL12B.html).  The sheer size of this spectacular work left us speechless - measuring 70 x 30 x 12'.

    Re: Name That Artist!

Now we're cookin', Sooz!  When you're clammering for clues, bring out your magnifying glass because you're gonna need it.....

     magnifying glass

    Clues, Clues, Clues:
    - uses rice or grains of sand and a surgical blade to create a  "micro sculpture"
    - often takes months to complete one, working between heartbeats to avoid hand tremors
    - born 1957; from Birmingham, England
    - the artist uses a hair plucked from a dead fly (the fly has to have died from natural causes, as (the artist) refuses to kill them for the sake of his art) to paint
    - this artist is learning disabled, and doesn't know how to read or write. Because the artist was made to feel small, the artist wanted to prove that "less is more," and that "nothing could be everything."

I found him ----  Willard Wigan ---- and his wonderfully tiny works of art.  Here are some examples:

I'll be back in a little while with the next "Name That Artist" clue.   ~Lori

You did indeed find him, Lori!  Was it your magnifying glass that assisted you in unearthing this 'tiny' artist?  You're up for the next one!

    Re: Name That Artist!

OK, it's Monday Morning (again) and it's time to NAME THAT ARTIST!  This self-taught artist (another of my favorites) --  became the highest paid female illustrator in the U.S. while still a teenager (19)!  She was an author, poet, sculptress, actress AND suffragette!  Her work has appeared in many publications including Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Harper's Bazaar and Cosmopolitan.  Her more serious works of art could be found in New York and Paris galleries of the 1920's.  After two failed marriages, she turned to her artwork to heal her heart.Broken Heart  While sleeping, she dreamt about certain little characters and immediately upon waking starting drawing them.  These are the famous characters that captured the hearts of people worldwide.  These were produced as dolls in Germany in 1913 and were soon found associated with cups, greeting cards, story books, clocks, etc, and even appeared on a box of Jell-O-Pudding.  Every year there is a festival in Branson, Missouri at this artist's rebuilt home-turned-museum to celebrate this now famous American icon.  CAN YOU NAME THIS ARTIST?  Big Smile
