Do you use words in your art?

    If so, how?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

Re: Do you use words in your art?

Well, I'm an art journaler so yeah I have tons of words and art mixed in those. I love to use different lettering styles, colored pens, chalk, markers, etc for the writing in my journal so the words are sort of art, too.

I use text in a lot of my collages.  Not necessarily specific, readable text, but just the text as an image a lot.  Sometimes i so use words as a message. An example is the Crone/Crow picture in my gallery.

When I doodle, and make ATC's I often use one word as the graphic.

i'm a total text junkie. my collage work almost always involves text somewhere, even if it's just the background.

I make tags and create altered pages using old stapled booklets and I ALWAYS use words- at the very least, letters. I live at ReCollections where I overload on paper and anything word/letter related. Then again, I'm a writer so what do I expect "write"?

Re: Do you use words in your art?

I use them in the digital art a lot because it's so easy.  I have started a series of couples collages using vintage images of couples and I like to add one line of text that starts a story to go with the imagery.  I know that's not an original idea.  I see it a lot in collages these days.

I've been making some ACEO's lately using a technique I saw on Claudine Hellmuth's DVD about textures and techniques.  She uses already printed materials but I've been making my own just by filling a page with words.  See the example below.  It's a rune (yup, I'm still making oracles), so the words are some of the meanings of this particular one.  The spirals were collaged on too.

I added the word heARt-a-Day on top in Photoshop.  That's just my little watermark.

Re: Do you use words in your art?

Oh my gosh. I love using words, but I don't do it all the time.  It really depends on the piece.  If I'm doing collaging in my journal, I don't use words, unless I'm really stressed out.  I find I cut up lots of words and paste them all over my collage, it usually happens when I'm frustrated or in a bad mood.  My words seem to emphasize what I'm feeling.  I like to use more visuals when I'm calmer, seems to flow better without words. I'm always inspired by quotes when I journal and I build a collage around a quote or the feeling I get from it.

    Hugs,

    Holly

Re: Do you use words in your art?

I love using words in my art but sometimes I fight the urge to do so.  I am a writer as well as an artist, so those two creatrive egos try to edge each other out! The writer in me wants to wax poetic while the artist wants the art to do its own speaking.  So, a little text here, no text here...it all works out right in the end!

Oh yes.... at the moment I can't seem to produce any art work without having found some words that seem to bring the piece of art work to life.. I can start a painting.... create the background... but am unable to finish the detail until I have found the right words or quote... it can be quit frustrating at times.. especially when I have deadlines... I'm hoping to find inspiration here to start writing more myself instead of relying on quotes from other people...

hoping that I'm doing this right as I've only just signed in to the cafe.... this is my first post...

     best wishes to all...

Yes I have  , not with every project , but with many.

I sometimes buy the word stickers   available for scrap booking  and  make poetry and images on  photo frames or notebooks with them.

Chameleon -- I would be delighted to help you get an image posted.

Do you want me to teach you how to do it?

Or, you can just eMail me the image, and then write your post, and I will add the picture to the post for you.

Or, you can go to this FAQ answer where Art and Ella explain how to do it:  http://artellacafe.com/forums/t/899.aspx

    OK?

Re: Do you use words in your art?

With most of my collage work, I use papers that are found, manufactured or handmade adding textural objects such as buttons, beads, digital images, words from magazines and fibre to the surface with paint, pastels and various other artist media.  Just like a story, some collages come together fairly quickly and others require several more drafts. Storyteller is a response to poems and stories that continue to inspire a series of works.  The words I used in the collage below are from magazine clippings - no old magazines hit the recycling bin until interesting clippings are cut and saved for future uses. Needless to say, I am never at a 'loss for words' as my storage boxes are plump full of them!

    I like that chameleon!

Here's my folder for important travel papers when we were moving from Texas to Mass last fall.

It summed up how I felt about  this huge & scary decision:
