Gauguin held onto his own beliefs about what art should or should not be. Rather than imitating exactly what was before him, he interpreted what he saw and placed something of himself within each artwork. In the work /Storyteller/, I have used a combination of words to express myself when "I shut my eyes" such as: As Eye See It, Show and Tell, Exposures, What is in a Name?, along with many others.

AND...Here are the other wonderful entries:

"In Order to See", Digital Collage

    by Tara Douglas-Smith

    "Eyes Wide Open", Poem

    by Constance Bates

No one is born with eyes wide open,

and I am like you, after all:

the dreary drive of push and pull,

the closing door through which I slip,

the head-long fight to live beyond

    the pale and darkish veil

    is strong.

    After the waterway, and blood,

the comforting cord begins to choke,

and I would hold my bubbling breath

    if only to be done at last;

and then I pass, eyes tightly shut,

and shield my soul from hellish sights.

    Nothing’s wrong:

Somehow I know just when to squint,

and blink, and then they laugh, and think,

“Oh NOW she sees!” and count the toes

and touch the ears and nose and

think I am unknowing, new –

My eyes were wide, wide open, when

I chose to close them, like Gauguin:

For as I’m born, and as I die,

I shut my eyes in order to see,

    And move along.
