Oh, aren't you lucky! I live in a city (approximately 80,000 people) but only a few galleries. Luckily, we live close to two bigger centres that exhibit outstanding collections and numerous fantastic galleries. My favorites are often those that sell and/or exhibit local (meaning provincial or state) art. In that way, I feel I am supporting the artist community that is close by and often reflect the world near by them. For example, we live in a "Prairie Province" which is Alberta, Canada. We have lots of coulees, hills, canola fields, wheat fields, evergreen trees further north, rivers and lakes. We are neighbors with British Columbia which boasts the ocean with artwork often reflecting their appreciation for the water.
Does your city also actively purchase public art? I believe it's important that city officials recognize the importance of visual art in the daily lives of its' citizens. Our city is starting to catch on to the idea of public art although there is always resistance to spending tax dollars on art from some parts of the population. Luckily, we have a few people in key city positions that are working hard towards furthering the arts in our community. Yeah!
Nice to 'meet' you, Marcia.
