Remember September Mail Art
In past years, Artella has been proud to help spread the word about the Remember September Mail Art Project, which commemorates 9/11. I wasn't sure if the project organizer, Gail Ellspermann, was repeating the project this year, and she was late getting back to me because of a death in her family. But I found out that, indeed, she will be collecting mail art envelopes for this year, and it's fine if people mail their envelope a few days late.
You simply decorate the outside of an envelope in honor of 9/11, and send your envelope to:
Remember September
PO Box 793
Katonah, NY 10536
It will become part of the Remember September Mail Art collection, which has been going on every year since the 1-year anniversary of the attacks. For complete information, go to:

Here is the envelope I made for this year. It's a simple digital collage that I printed directly on the envelope:

Also - i wanted to share a small image (the only one I have, unfortunately) of the envelope I made a few years ago, in 2004. I took a black and white illustration of women at an old-fashioned quilting bee, and I colored it with markers and altered it so that the women were working on small, artful envelopes, while the twin towers dances above them, in their collective memories. To me, this symbolizes the power of this project -- just like the old quilting bees, creative people are coming together to use art to make something meaningful.

I hope you'll join me in creating an envelope this year.
