Wing Span?

Normally, when talking about Hawks, we talk about wing span. I find the wing span of many Hawks to be very impressive. The wing span is measured from left wing tip to right wing tip.  A Red Tailed Hawk's wing span is in the range of 43 to 57 inches. When I visualize Hawks, I see them flying high and soaring and gliding through the sky. This is a Red Tailed Hawk. What's wrong with this picture?  We're certainly not talking about wing span here. But, look at that leg span. Not something you would intuitively think about or talk about regarding Hawks. I never thought I would see the day I would see a Hawk run!  And, yes, he was running away from me. He was injured and I was intent on rescue. Who knew I was that scary!  If he only knew that I was far more afraid of him than he should have been of me.  I have a couple more pictures of him at rest in my gallery. Come take a look at http://artellacafe.com/photos/julies_joy/default.aspx

Hi Aunt Bobby!

I never did catch that bird. I was told never to attempt to handle these birds by those who know how to handle them. I tried to get help that day but no one was available. I followed the Hawk and stayed with him until sundown hoping I could get help. The next day, I did get someone from the Raptor Center to come and take a look around the pond to see if we could find him, but no luck. The good news is that we didn't see a pile of feathers anywhere, so I would like to believe he went on his merry way. Normally, you can tell what's wrong with a bird when you see he's injured. Not so with this one. His behavior is the only thing that gave him away. I can only surmise that he flew into a window and lost his senses or got knocked silly temporarily. I'll be looking for him in the sky next time and not on the ground.

Hugs,  Julie

Well, not only did I get your new comment but the old one too. :P I hope they get published now. :)

And as for disappearing comments, I posted here last night and it's not here so I'll do a little reposting as well! :)

I have been noticing hawk often lately and am not sure if you are into animal medicine but for me, hawk if VERY fitting these days. Your pictures are great reminders and I just love them!
