Some Days Are For The Birds

A couple of days before I had the surgery on my foot, I hung up some suet and a bird feeder in the front yard. It is about the time of year when my feathered friends need a little help to supplement their meager winter diet. I thought it would also keep me entertained while I was recuperating. I have been having a blast watching them come and go as they snack on the goodies that I put out for them. I was really hoping to get some great pictures in addition to watching the entertainment. However, the weather has been so dark, dreary, and rainy that it has been near impossible to get any decent shots. I have been taking pictures in the middle of the day, but you could swear it was nighttime because they come out so dark. In addition to the lighting problems, my feathery friends have been very uncooperative and flighty, excuse the pun. I used to do quite a lot of bird watching and I remember them being much more cooperative. I seem to recall they would sit still long enough for me to focus my field glasses and compare all of their markings to the detailed descriptions in my bird book. Perhaps they’re camera shy! I’ve posted most of the pictures I have been able to get in my gallery already. I hope you’ll come take a look.

And you thought I was just a Bug Girl!

Hi Julie! Your photos are amazing, as usual. You're very good with composition and getting right in there to show the details. It's a pleasure to view your gallery. Thank you for sharing the beauty you see through your eyes.

Also, I hope you're recuperating from the foot surgery in a timely manner. Maybe now you have some time to get to those collages you've been putting off? Nothing like physical downtime to make you sit down and create!

All my best to you,

Mary

Some days are bird days, but I do trust that saying: "Every dog has its day."  Which sounds at first like we're waiting for revenge, but it actually means that we'll eventually get that promotion, or that prize or whatever...  It may sound trite, but I do believe that "success is the best revenge."  Not that I live my life by making revenge my goal.  I think that by focusing on a goal and moving toward it is what is key...  it's actually the movement that keeps you alive.  What do you think?  I want to thank you so much for your comments and for speaking about "the war zone".  You nailed that one!  Some of the stuff that happens is so unspeakable that pictures become the only way to start to describe it for me.  The words come after.  And nature is so very comforting isn't it?  Thanks again for your comments and for sharing.  Sometimes I want to try to ignore that part of my art or to make only "happy" art, but like the Armenian Holocaust survivor said recently, "Remembering is key to understanding the present. To try to forget or deny my story would be to misrepresent myself, to be incomplete."  It is strange that relating experiences that are terrifying, painful and sometime ugly, can be somehow transformed by art and in the telling into something beautiful and somehow bring comfort and healing.  But that's art, that's creativity, that's life!  Your friend, Lori

I don't like winter mainly because of the dark, dreary days.  We had 6" of snow last night, but today is bright and beautiful!  It's still cloudy, but sun is managing to brighten things up somehow.  I don't see any birds flying around, though.  A couple of days ago there were 3 cardinals eating orange berries from a tree in our backyard.  It would have made a beautiful picture, except it was a gray, dreary day.  Seeing the cardinals still made the day beautiful!
